Optometrist
Dr. Jim Fick was born and raised in Minnesota. He is a licensed optometric physician and is therapeutically certified. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, he earned his Doctorate of Optometry from The Ohio State University College of Optometry in 2002.
During his clinical education, he completed his externship at the Cheyenne Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he gained valuable experience in diagnosing and management of various ocular diseases including cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Dr. Fick’s clinical interest is in the area of managing glaucoma, macular degeneration, and the application of specialty contact lenses in the treatment of various corneal and ocular surface diseases. Dr. Fick applies a relaxed demeanor in inpatient encounters to foster a friendly doctor-patient interaction. In his free time, Dr. Fick enjoys hunting, spending time outdoors, traveling, and spending time with his wife and three children.
Optometrist
Dr. Tonya M.S. Umbel, O.D. is a licensed optometric physician, therapeutically certified, and specialized in Pediatrics, Binocular Vision dysfunction, and traumatic brain injury. She is a West Virginia native, growing up in Grafton WV. She graduated from Grafton High school in 2005.
She attended Wheeling Jesuit University, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry in 2008, and Indiana University School of Optometry, earning her Doctorate of Optometry in 2012. She then completed her Residency at Vision Northwest, Federal Way, WA in Pediatric Eye Care, Vision Therapy, and Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation through Pacific University Oregon College of Optometry in 2013. During her clinical education, she gained experience in diagnosis and management of lazy eye, convergence insufficiency, binocular vision dysfunction, visual information processing deficits, and Post-Trauma Vision syndrome. Her passion lies in helping people regain control of their lives through vision rehabilitation. She has completed her Fellowship in Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation and successfully passed the MCE exam for the College of Optometrist in Vision Development. Dr. Umbel is currently accepting new patients. In her free time, Dr. Umbel enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, serving as “homeroom mom”, attending St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, and serving on the fellowship committee for the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association.
Practice Administrator
Sara was born and raised in WV, and has lived here all her life. After graduating high school she started working for a local newspaper office, where she worked for 21 years. Sara joined Fick Eyecare in 2013, as a technician. She is loyal, honest and determined. She now manages the insurance claims, billing, payments, and answers questions that you may have about your account. When not working, Sara likes to spend time with her family & friends. She likes taking walks and vacations to Tennessee and the OuterBanks.
